The more you know about the principles of the motorcycle, its individual components and their interaction with each other, the better you understand the behavior of the bike as a whole and its capabilities. For example, you’ve learned that the suspension is loaded and compressed during braking – when you use the front brake, the bike’s balance shifts to the front wheel, and when the rear wheel is squeezed out, the bike’s balance shifts to the rear wheel, although it is already loaded with traction. And here’s the answer to the question of why the front brake is considered the main brake.

When you understand how the suspension reacts to braking, there is no desire to squeeze out and throw levers. You start to think when it is most logical and profitable to use the front or rear brake. Beginners often use only one brake because it is more comfortable for them, they are afraid or do not know how to choose the braking method according to the road situation. But it’s never too late to train yourself and learn something new!

Then you learn that the contact stain on the rear wheel is bigger than on the front wheel. It’s clear why working with the rear brake alone helps you avoid falling into corners, and combined braking always starts with the rear brake and is complemented by the front brake – most effectively when stopping at higher speeds.

This way, you don’t have to learn how to ride the bike, you start to navigate the bike based on the structure of the bike and the learning curve will go much faster.

Skill can be considered worked out when it goes into reflexes. In dense city traffic for maneuvering or emergency braking every second is more expensive than gold. The speed of the flow makes the trip predictable, but always someone will try to suddenly slip in front of you on a red light or will not notice the bike in the row spacing. You will be protected by speed of reaction and correctness of actions.

In a city environment, you have to manoeuvre at low and medium speeds when space is limited, such as in parking lots or traffic jams, in curves with a decreasing radius. Here, skills such as hanging and counterweighing will be effective.

This allows for a large and, above all, safe radius when driving around obstacles. Note that you should start hanging before turning when the bike is still in a relatively vertical position. Hands should be relaxed so that you can manoeuvre safely and do not tilt your bike too much behind you.

In counterweights, tilt the bike towards the bend and the driver remains perpendicular to the road. At this point you need good constant traction, but there is a risk of not having time to straighten the bike in case of a sharp obstacle.

It is best to practice skills on special sites, as doing it on public roads is fraught with creating an emergency situation.
